Obedient
Heart is the piece that marked my return to serious art making. As with all my
work, it reflects perfectly the concerns and state of mind that I was feeling
then. As the heart bursts outward from the confines of the triangular grid, so
too my heart burst outward from self-imposed confinement of fear and conformity.
The leather straps keep the heart from exploding too far, so I also keep myself
from becoming lost in the world through dedication and hard work to that which
keeps me sane. I'm holding onto this piece as it really has a lot of personal
meaning for me.
Just a few construction notes: The piece is made from 3/8" woven rebar with the center burned and twisted out with a torch. The heart is carved from douglas fir and finished in an old-fashioned orange shellac finish. the steel is unfinished and will be allowed to rust further.
